算術

四則運算通稱為「算術」，英文是 arithmetic。 數學的英文是 mathematics，數學和算術當然不一樣； 也要注意 mathematics 看起來像一個複數名詞，但它是單數， 例如 mathematics is power。 Mathematics 經常被縮寫成 math（美式）或 maths（英式）， 例如 math is fun，maths is everywhere。 做數學的人──數學師或數學家──稱為 mathematician。

四則運算之加減乘除四個算法的名詞分別是： addition (加法), subtraction (減法), multiplication (乘法) 和 division (除法)。 而動詞是：add, subtract, multiply 和 divide。 + 號是 plus sign，- 號是 minus sign， × 號是 cross sign，÷ 號是 division sign。 = 號是 equal sign，「等於」是 equals 或 is equal to。

注意英文報讀算式的習慣順序，跟中文有些不同，舉例如下。

• 6 + 2: add two to six 也可以說 six plus two， 加起來的結果稱為「和」，就是 sum。 The sum of six plus two is eight 或者 six plus two equals eight。
• 6 - 2: subtract two from six 也可以說 six minus two， 減出來的結果稱為「差」，就是 difference。 The difference is four 或者 the difference equals four。
• 6 × 2: six multiplied by two 或者 multiply six by two， 也可以說 six times two， 乘出來的結果稱為「積」，就是 product。
• 6 ÷ 2: six divided by two 或者 divide six by two。 如果限定為整數除法 integer division， 則應該算出一個「商」quotient，和一個「餘」remainder。 這種除法，西方稱為歐幾里德除法 (Euclidean division)。

  在 6 ÷ 2 算式裡， 6 是被除數 dividend，2 是除數 divisor； 其中 dividend 也有「紅利」的意思，divisor 也有「因數」的意思。 6 ÷ 2 恰好會整除，six is evenly divided by two， 或者說 six is divisible by two，所以說 two is a divisor of six。 因為 divide evenly，所以沒有餘數，可以說 remainder is zero， 但還是說 no remainder 比較好。 例如：

  • 6 ÷ 2 = 3 ... 0 可以說 The quotient of six divided by two is three, no remainder.
  • 17÷5 的商是 3，餘 2：The quotient of seventeen divided by five is three with a remainder of two.
  • 19÷10 的整數除法等於 1 餘 9：The integer division of nineteen divided by ten equals one, the remainder is nine.

  除法原理 (Euclidean division lemma) 是說整數除法的各部份有以下關係： \[\array{ \text{被除數}=\text{商}\times\text{除數}+\text{餘數}\\ \text{Dividend}=\text{Quotient}\times\text{Divisor}+\text{Remainder} }\]

算術基本定理 the fundamental theorem of arithmetic 是說： 不理會順序差異 ignoring the order， 每個大於一的整數 any integer greater than one 都可以寫成唯一的質數乘積 a unique product of prime numbers。 也就是說有唯一的質因數分解 a unique factorization of prime numbers， 所以它又稱為唯一分解定理 unique factorization theorem。
