當時把 \(a=10^u\) 的數對 \((a,u)\)「對列成表」, 稱為「對數表」(logarithm table 或 table of logarithm), 其中 \(a\) 稱為「原數」,到了康熙時代改稱「真數」, 而「與 \(a\) 相對的數」最後就稱為「\(a\) 的對數」了,記作 \(\log a\)。

在數對 \((a,u)\) 的關係 \(a=10^u\) 中,底數 10 也稱為 \(\log a\) 的底數。 以 10 為底的對數(logarithm to the base ten)記作 \(\log_{10}\): 把底數 10 寫成 log 的足標或下標(subscript)。 而 \(\log_{10} 2\) 讀作 log base ten of two。 Logarithm to the base ten 稱為常用對數 common logarithm。 任何除了一以外的正數 \(b\),記作 \(0\lt b\not=1\): For any number \(b\) which is greater than zero but not equal to one, 都可以作為關係式 \(a=b^u\) 的底數,而以 \(b\) 為底的對數 \(a\) (log to the base \(b\) of \(a\))記作 \(\log_b a\), 例如 \(\log_2 8=3\):log base two of eight is three。

只要明白 any positive number a 都滿足 \(a=10^{\displaystyle\log a}\), 就很清楚:對數律只不過是指數律的另一種形式而已。

Product Rule (for logarithms) \[ \log_b(a\times c) = \log_b a + \log_b c \]

Log of Power Rule 或者 Power Rule (for logarithms) \[ \log_b a^p = p\times \log_b a\] 根據 \(\displaystyle{1\over c}=c^{-1}\) 可以得到(對數的)除法律 Quotient Rule (for logarithms) \[\log_b \displaystyle{a\over c}=\log_b a - \log_b c \]

Change of Base \[ \log_b a = {\displaystyle \log a\over \log b}\]

[語音講解:log.mp3]
