實數

實數 (real numbers) 是用來測量的數，它的直覺意義就是單位量的倍數。 所謂「數與量」的數 (number) 傳統的概念是指正整數，而量 (quantity) 其實就是實數。 Real number 跟 rational number 這兩個數系的差別， 在於實數系具有完備性：Real numbers are complete； 意思是說任意一個小數 \[0.a_1\,a_2\,a_3\,a_4\cdots\] 都是實數，其中 \(a_n\) 表示小數點下第 \(n\) 位， 它是 0, 1, 2, ..., 9 之間的任一個數。 我們通常把實數的完備性 (the completeness of the real numbers) 視為公設 (axiom) 而不予證明。

有理數是 rational numbers， 相對地，無理數就是「非有理數之實數」的意思， 英文是 irrational numbers；注意有兩個 R 字母。 Rational number 沒有理性的意思，irrational number 也沒有不理性或荒謬的意思。

\(\sqrt{\quad}\) 和所有像 \(\sqrt[3]{\quad}\) 這種開根號的符號，稱為 radical 或 radical symbol。 \(\sqrt2\) 這種數稱為二的平方根 square root of two，或者簡稱為根號二 root two。 如果 n 不是一個完全平方數 perfect square 或說平方數 square number， 則 \(\sqrt{n}\) 稱為 surd (不盡根)，例如 The square root of two is a surd。

絕對值的英文是 absolute value。電腦語言通常簡寫成 abs， 計算機則通常沒有這個按鍵。 不是只有分數才能取倒數，無理數也可以作倒數。 例如黃金比是唯一等於其倒數加一的正數： The golden ratio is the only positive number that is equal to its reciprocal plus one.

大於 \(\gt\) 是 greater than，大於或等於 \(\geq\) 是 be greater than or equal to； 小於 \(\lt\) 是 less than，小於或等於 \(\leq\) 是 be less than or equal to。 注意 be 動詞，例如 \(|x|\leq1\) 等價於 is equivalent to \(-1\leq x\leq 1\)：x is greater than or equal to negative one and less than or equal to one。 區間是 interval，開區間稱為 open interval，閉區間稱為 closed interval， 而半開或半閉就是 half-open 或 half-closed interval。
